Checked November 3, 2026 against Apple’s instructions. Button combinations depend on the device model. Settings and Control Center instructions below refer to current software; older versions can show different controls.
To turn off an iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch, open its shutdown controls and use the Power Off slider. Choose the instructions for your device below. Locking the screen or letting the display sleep leaves the device running.
Scroll horizontally to view all columns.
| Device | Button route | Detail to check |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Side or top button; some models also need a volume button | Find your model group below |
| iPad | Top button; models without Home also need a volume button | Whether there is a Home button |
| Apple Watch | Side button, then the onscreen Power control | Take it off the charger first |
Turn off an iPhone
Use the button combination for your model:
- iPhone with Face ID or iPhone Duo: hold the side button together with either volume button until the sliders appear.
- iPhone 6, 7, 8 or iPhone SE (2nd or 3rd generation): hold the side button alone until the shutdown slider appears.
- iPhone SE (1st generation), iPhone 5 or earlier: hold the top button until the shutdown slider appears.
Release the buttons when the controls appear, then drag Power Off. Allow about 30 seconds for the iPhone to finish shutting down.
Apple’s model-group instructions cover the side- and top-button models. Its current iPhone on/off guide also explicitly includes iPhone Duo.
Turn off an iPad
- Without a Home button: hold the top button together with either volume button until the shutdown slider appears. This includes models with Face ID and models with Touch ID in the top button.
- With a Home button: hold the top button alone until the shutdown slider appears.
Release the buttons, move the Power Off slider and allow about 30 seconds for shutdown. Apple documents the two layouts in its iPad on/off guide and restart instructions.
Turn off an Apple Watch
Apple Watch cannot shut down while it is charging. If a watchOS update is installing, let it finish before attempting these steps.
- Remove the watch from its charger.
- Hold the side button until the sliders appear, then release it. Use the side button, not the Digital Crown.
- Tap the Power icon at the top right.
- Drag Power Off to the right.
These are the current watchOS controls described in Apple’s Apple Watch on/off guide. Older software can display different controls. Apple’s update instructions say to leave the watch charging and avoid restarting it while an update installs.
Use Settings or Control Center on iPhone and iPad
Settings
- Open Settings > General.
- Scroll down and tap Shut Down.
- Move the shutdown slider.
This provides an onscreen route when the touchscreen is working and you prefer not to hold hardware buttons. Apple’s current iPhone and iPad guides document it.
Control Center
- Open Control Center. Swipe down from the top-right corner on iPhone with Face ID, iPhone Duo or iPad. On an iPhone SE with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom edge.
- Touch and hold the Power icon at the upper right, then release it.
- Drag the shutdown slider.
If your software does not show that Power control, use Settings or the model’s button method. See Apple’s iPhone Control Center guide and iPad instructions.
Turn the device back on
- iPhone: hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. On iPhone SE (1st generation), iPhone 5 or earlier, use the top button.
- iPad: hold the top button until the Apple logo appears.
- Apple Watch: hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
These startup steps are included in Apple’s iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch instructions. If a device will not start, its battery may need charging.
If the screen does not respond
The slider and Settings methods need a responsive touchscreen. Apple provides separate troubleshooting instructions to force restart an iPhone, force restart an iPad or restart an unresponsive Apple Watch. Follow the instructions for your exact model.
Older iPhones use different restart sequences. Apple’s model-specific troubleshooting page includes the iPhone 7 and iPhone 6s-or-earlier groups.
A force restart starts the device again. Once it responds, use the normal shutdown method if you want to leave it off. For Apple Watch, let an active software update finish before attempting a restart.
